  1. Hello fellow Scorps

Last weekend (well, the 27-29th) I was at Edwards doing a book signing for Desert High. On a side note, I got to speak in the gym and basically do assemblies all day long, talking to the whole school. That was rad. Who’dathunk I’d be doing that when I was a wee lad back in ’77 thru ’81??

Anyway, the Desert Wings and the AV Press gave it some pre-event coverage and I guess Coach Matthews’ ex-wife saw it, because she called me while I was at the BX and asked about getting a copy of the book for Coach. She told me that Leroy Matthews is living in Hawaii, but his health isn’t doing too well (understatement). She gave me his address and encouraged me to share it, in case any fellow alumni wanted to write him and wish him well, etc.

So, if you’d like to write him, get ahold of me. Either FB message me or email is probably quickest – dougvanpelt@gmail.com

Please consider writing him a short letter. Apparently he’s not internet-savvy, so an old-fashioned letter via snail-mail is the way to go.

    Cheers,
    -Doug

  2. Hey, all you DHS alumni living near Edwards!!!

I’ll be doing a BOOK SIGNING at Edwards BX this Friday from 3:30 pm to 8pm (and again Saturday morning from 9am to 11am). Please come out if you’re nearby (240 W. Fitzgerald Blvd). I’ll be selling and signing copies of Desert High and giving away a spiffy wide purple silicone Desert Scorpions wristband with the purchase of the book. Please help spread the word.

  3. Ceejay…

Your comment was well-spoken with regard to your expression of fondness for your fellow DHS classmates. The world has changed a great deal since high school, but we can in many ways retain (and pay homage to) those treasured memories and times-gone-by not forgetting those friendships and special times. It seems people are not as trustworthy, nor are general associations considered safe, in today’s times; however, the quintessential embodiment that permeates in veins of many DHS alumni is a welcome comfort in a world that has seemingly collapsed upon itself over the expanse of time.

Time truly has gone wayyyy too fast..for all of us. I will be 47 in April 2012, and I cannot believe it when I look in the mirror and see the haunting gray hairs, feel the lack of energy I felt in my youth, and look in the eyes of my children and see a mirror image of that kinder and gentler time that seems so very long ago that we can almost dismiss it as a dream, rather than memories.

Did you ever listen to ‘Dust In The Wind’ by Kansas? That song still makes me remember Edwards in 1977, and as my close my eyes I can hear and see the tumbleweeds and sand kick up next to the playground of Branch Elementary, and of course that familiar tear escape my tightly-closed eyelids and roll quietly down my cheek…

  4. This is so wonderful to have this page to stay in touch. My traveling days are over, but my fondness for my classmates will never be over. CeeJay
